The Disney Princess FB page had four princesses -- Belle, Jasmine, Mulan and Rapunzel -- but Mulan seemed the most appropriate choice. While her feminism is a source of debate for many academics, I feel like, in terms of "women's economic, political and social achievements," she's the best Disney Princess--closely followed by Tiana.
I'll freely admit: I didn't really know today was "International Women's Day" until I saw all the social media posts...and even then, I didn't fully know what it was. I mean...I get the basic context from the name, but still.
So, according to the Wikipedia page (and since this isn't an academic piece, citing Wikipedia is totally okay):
"In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation, and love towards women for women's economic, political, and social achievements. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended the culture of many countries, primarily in Europe, especially those in the Soviet Bloc.[3] In some regions, the day lost its political flavor, and became simply an occasion for people to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and Valentine's Day. In other regions, however, the political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. Some people celebrate the day by wearing purple ribbons."Huh. Interesting.
